Breaking Free from Procrastination: Overcoming the Fear That Holds You Back

woman looking at her phone
Are you letting fear and discomfort hold you back?

I want to tell you a story about a client. Everyone saw her as a successful entrepreneur, but behind the scenes, she was crumbling under pressure.

On the outside, her business was thriving. She was constantly on the go, meeting deadlines, revenue was at an all time high, and she was showing up for everyone.

But the reality? She was exhausted, overwhelmed, and stuck in a cycle of procrastination and unhealthy coping habits.

She told herself she was just ‘too busy’ to focus on her well-being, but deep down, she was drowning in self-doubt and perfectionism.

The pressure to perform never stopped, and she felt guilty even thinking about slowing down to take care of herself.

That’s when she realized the truth: Success isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what aligns with finding the freedom to care for yourself.

She made a choice. She stopped letting fear control her decisions.

Together, we crafted a plan for how to break free from the habits and mindsets that were keeping her stuck. And for the first time in years, she finally felt in control—not just of her business, but of her life.

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. So many high-achievers secretly struggle with these same cycles—but you don’t have to stay stuck.

Procrastination isn’t just about being lazy or bad at time management—it’s often deeply rooted in fear and discomfort.

Whether it’s the fear of failure, perfectionism, or the overwhelm of starting something big, procrastination keeps us stuck. The good news? You can break free.

1. Understanding Why We Procrastinate

🔥 It’s Not Laziness—It’s Fear. Most of the time, we put things off because:✔️ We’re afraid we won’t do it “right” (perfectionism).✔️ We feel overwhelmed and don’t know where to start.✔️ We’re avoiding discomfort (boredom, frustration, or even possible failure).✔️ The task isn’t urgent, so we push it aside.

When we procrastinate, we trade short-term relief for long-term stress. The more we delay, the bigger the task feels—creating a vicious cycle of avoidance.

2. What Procrastination Looks Like (and How to Identify It)

🚩 Signs You Might Be Procrastinating:❌ You keep saying, “I’ll do it tomorrow.”❌ You distract yourself with busy work instead of the important task.❌ You wait for the “perfect time” to start.❌ You feel anxious or guilty about avoiding the task but still can’t get started.

3. How to Break Free from Procrastination

✅ 1. Identify the Fear Behind ItAsk yourself: “What am I avoiding? What’s the worst that could happen if I just start?”

✅ 2. Break It Into Small StepsInstead of saying “I need to write this report,” start with “I’ll write the first sentence.” Small progress is still progress.

✅ 3. Set a Timer (The 5-Minute Rule)Commit to working on the task for just 5 minutes. More often than not, you’ll keep going!

✅ 4. Find an Accountability PartnerTell someone your deadline and ask them to check in on you. When others hold us accountable, we’re more likely to follow through.

✅ 5. Reward YourselfGive yourself something to look forward to after completing the task—a cup of coffee, a short walk, or a favorite show.

✅ 6. Practice Self-CompassionInstead of beating yourself up for procrastinating, recognize that fear plays a role. Show yourself grace and take action anyway.
