Is Alcohol Holding You Back from Freedom? How to Identify the Chains & Break Free

ree

A client once came to me wanting to moderate his drinking. He told me he didn’t have a problem with alcohol—he just wanted to cut back. He wanted to get out of the “habit” of drinking every night and shift to drinking only on his days off.

I shared my perspective with him: If you need help moderating, then you probably have a problem with alcohol. He resisted, insisting that we simply focus on moderation.

So we did—for a while.

Then one day, he looked at me and said, “I have a problem with alcohol, and I need to quit.”

That was the turning point. From that moment, our work shifted from managing alcohol to creating freedom—freedom from the stressors, triggers, and patterns that had kept him stuck.

What Does Freedom Mean to You?

For this client, freedom wasn’t just about quitting alcohol. It was about defining what a fulfilling life looked like for him. We worked together to:

✅ Establish clear boundaries between work and personal life

✅ Prioritize his physical well-being

✅ Create a sense of home—a space where he felt at ease, rather than using alcohol to escape

This week, he had a breakthrough moment. He told me, “Home means being able to enjoy the mundane.”

Before, evenings meant drinking on the couch, passing time instead of living it. Now, he finds joy in cooking dinner, keeping up with laundry, taking care of his body, and simply being present in his own life.

He realized alcohol had been a chain holding him back from fully experiencing his own world. Now, he’s stepping into freedom—on his own terms.

Is Alcohol Holding You Back? 5 Questions to Ask Yourself

If you’ve ever wondered whether alcohol is getting in the way of your happiness, here are five key questions to reflect on:

1️⃣ Do you find yourself drinking out of habit rather than enjoyment?

Are you drinking because you truly want to, or because it’s just what you do?

2️⃣ Have you ever tried to moderate and struggled?

Cutting back seems simple in theory—but if it feels nearly impossible in practice, it could be a sign that alcohol has more control over you than you think.

3️⃣ Do you feel relief or anxiety at the thought of going alcohol-free?

If the idea of taking a break makes you uncomfortable, ask yourself why.

4️⃣ Is alcohol interfering with your personal goals or well-being?

Does drinking make it harder to maintain healthy habits, relationships, or professional ambitions?

5️⃣ Do you find yourself missing out on life’s simple joys?

Are you spending more time escaping reality than actually living it?
